Biernat’s Buckets

Senior Ben Biernat is captain of the basketball team and the treasurer of the student body. Most know Biernat from his role on the court and in the student body, but not everyone knows what goes on behind the scenes.

Biernat puts in large amounts of hard work and determination in all aspects of his life. He maintains his grades, leads the school and basketball team, and makes time to show up to most of the school’s events.

Biernat was one of a few seniors who decided to run for class office. “I decided to run for class office because I wanted to have a leadership role in the school,” he said. “I always saw myself as a leader, so I thought this would be a good opportunity for me.”

Senior class president, Jed Straessle, often works with Biernat. “Ben is always a huge help as a class officer. There is a lot of behind-the-scenes work that goes into the stuff the school does and we all have to work together,” said Straessle. “We all have to put in ideas, and Ben is never afraid to speak his mind.”

Senior Grant Hodge is one of Biernat’s best friends. He said, “Ben is a great leader; he encourages everyone and cares so much about the school and everyone in it.”

Biernat enjoys being a part of the class office even with the extra responsibilities. “I love being available to people who have ideas,” said Biernat, “and I like being able to use my position to make those ideas heard.”

Doing all of these extra activities is no easy task. “It is challenging to balance all of the extra work I have to do,” said Biernat, “but thankfully the addition of the eighth period has allowed me to get home earlier. Even with that, I still have a lot of work to do, but you just have to make time.”

Biernat is also a great basketball player. “I started playing basketball when I was around five years old, and I was always pretty good at it,” said Biernat. “I also played other sports like football and baseball, but I realized I was the best at basketball, so I started going with that.”

Some players talk about how they feel pressure from themselves to perform, but it’s different for Biernat. “I don’t really feel any pressure from myself to perform, I mostly feel pressure to perform for the fans who came out to support me,” said Biernat. “I feel like since they took time out of their day to come watch me, I should make it worth their time.”

Being on the basketball team isn’t all about just playing basketball. It’s about the memories made as well. “My best memory of being on the team is probably when we were playing Cabot,” said Biernat. “We were down by 20 points at half, but the team came together, and we ended up winning the game by 20.

“Being on the basketball team has definitely helped me in other parts of my life,” said Biernat. “It has helped me in the class officer position because I am the team captain of the basketball team. It has helped me learn how to be a leader, and it helps keep me focused.”

Biernat is a big supporter of the school’s sports and events, some may even say he is the biggest supporter of these things. “We play in the hardest division in the state in all of our sports,” said Biernat, “and the work that all of our coaches and players have to put in is amazing. I like to be out there and be really supportive while they’re out there battling on the field.”

Straessle and Hodge notice this support from their classmate and friend. “Ben comes to almost every single Catholic High event,” said Hodge, “and it’s really great how he holds everyone accountable to show up.”

“A great thing about Ben is that he is always there. He shows up and supports his school at whatever event he’s watching,” said Straessle. “Whether it’s a football game or a theatre production, Ben is always there cheering the loudest and being there for his brothers.”
