Behind Baseball

The school baseball program has always been strong. Each year, they compete exceptionally well against larger schools like Bryant and Conway. This past year, the baseball team competed so well that they won the conference championship. The school was excited to watch the team compete in the post season championship, and the results were exceptional.

The baseball team won 12 of their 14 conference games. As stated above this was an exceptional season. For reference, the last time the team won the conference championship was 14 years ago. The team also performed great in the playoffs barely losing to Bentonville in the second round of the championship.

The senior-dominated roster was a large part of the team’s success. Mr. Bryan Jones said, “This team was exceptionally talented.  Normally, we start ten guys on our lineup card, and, on average, we started eight seniors every game. It is rare to have that many seniors in our starting line-up. In our class of 14 seniors, that means that five of them start on the bench. This class was able to stay focused in whatever role they were assigned.”

Mr. Jones was proud of his team’s effort throughout the season, but his favorite game was against Bentonville in the playoffs. “Even though we lost, our state tournament game with Bentonville is one to be proud of,” said Mr. Jones. “Down six to one with only a few at bat left, we managed to come back and tie the game at six to six before an eventual seven to six loss. I was very proud of our grit and determination in that game.  It showed everyone what it is like to play like a Rocket.”

“We didn’t give up,” said the first basemen Camden Tanner. “I wish we had pulled out the win, but I’m still proud of what we put together in the last moments of the game.”
