Richard Pellegrino, the captain of the 2014 wrestling team, stands triumphantly after a victory.

Thunderous booms, screeching whistles, and the yells of coaches were constant at the state wrestling finals where the varsity wrestlers snatched a victory from the defending champions, Bentonville. But what comes next for the newly crowned state champions?

The returning seniors all agreed that if the wrestling team is going to deliver another state championship, it will have to work a lot harder to train the incoming freshman and to condition as a team.

Senior Henry Yeary said, “The team is going to be hard pressed to win another championship because we lost two of our state champions and five more starters, so we have a lot of space to fill.”

This poses the question as to whether or not the wrestling team can recover from losing half of their starting lineup.

A couple of the returning seniors, Jared Gunderman, R.J. Felicitas, and Junior Cooper Griffin, believe that the team has a chance to get a second state championship.

Gunderman said, “We have a few returning state competitors, and a couple freshman, Kevin Roach and Grant Nolen, who could possibly deliver a good season. The team could really use some more support from the school and student body when there are home meets, and maybe even pep rallies for the bigger tournaments like Northwestern Arkansas Duals and, of course, the State Championship.”

The seniors all agreed with Gunderman when he said, “This year has the making of another positive season for the wrestling team.”
