Should the parking lot be bigger?

With all the new renovations to the school, there should be no reason for anyone to be upset. Several students, however, are troubled by the fact that the parking lot, which some students already thought was too small, has become even smaller due to space needed for construction.  While this is temporary, it has caused quite a commotion around the school.

There are a total of 353 student parking spots in the back parking lot and band parking lot as well as the various other spots where students park their cars. Because of the renovations, construction workers and equipment occupy the entire truck lot.

“I think its ridiculous that I can’t park my truck in the truck lot,” said junior Harris Blankenship. The truck lot was an extension to the original parking lot added on in 1995 adding 28 new truck-sized parking spaces. Aside from the loss of the truck lot, construction workers are using 14 other parking spots.

While the loss of parking spots may not be a huge problem yet, it could be later in the year. “I was running late last Tuesday and I got to school at 7:51 and the parking lot was already full and I had to go park at the mall.  I’ve never had this problem this early in the year before,” said junior Craig Wren.

Junior Whitt Miller is a student who spends most days parking at the Park Plaza parking lot. “If the parking lot was bigger [at school] I would park there, but I kind of like parking at the mall because it is faster to leave school,” said Miller.

Mr. Steve Straessle said, “There are currently no plans for a second expansion of the parking lot: however, it is definitely a possibility.  We’ll wait and see at the conclusion of our renovation. There may be some spots near the field.”

Until a solution arises, students will continue to fight over the available parking areas. Senior Michael Wilde said, “I’m always relieved when I show up at past 7:50 and find a spot.”
