It is no secret that many students complain about the reading selection for school; however, the overall attitude about the reading selection has both positive and negative opinions.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first book that students read when they get to this school is <\/span>And Then There Were None<\/span><\/i> by Agatha Christie. It is a book that is generally well-liked by the student body. \u201cI think what I loved was that it was a mystery novel and you never knew what was going to happen,\u201d said junior Essa Kassissieh. \u201cThe story was just very well-written.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Another popular book is <\/span>Animal Farm<\/span><\/i> by George Orwell, which is the first book sophomores read. \u201cI would have to say my favorite book is <\/span>Animal Farm<\/span><\/i>,\u201d said sophomore Daniel Nkunga. \u201cThe tragedy of the animals taking control of the farm only to fall into servitude to themselves is great.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are some stories that students may not find entertaining, but they do find impactful. \u201cI may not have enjoyed [<\/span>Farewell to Manzanar<\/span><\/i>],\u201d said Kassissieh. \u201cBut I definitely found value in it. I learned a lot about the Japanese-American internment camps during WWII and how that affected so many people.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many of the books that students read are about characters trying to find their identity and navigate their way through life. This is something that students are also trying to figure out. \u201cEllison showed us [in <\/span>Invisible Man<\/span><\/i>] the journey of the main character and how he came to realize his identity,\u201d said Kassissieh. \u201cThe book made me aware of the importance of finding your own identity and using it for the better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Reading books is a way to learn more and they can change your perspective on many aspects of life. \u201c<\/span>Of Mice and Men<\/span><\/i> really made me think of characters in a different way,\u201d said Nkunga. \u201cAlso the ending got me. It reminded me that a tragedy can have an incredibly satisfying ending.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While many students appreciate a multitude of books on the book list, they still think there is room for improvement. \u201cI would take off <\/span>Last of the Breed<\/span><\/i> from the freshman reading selection and add <\/span>Maus<\/span><\/i> by Art Speilgman,\u201d said Kassissieh. \u201cMaus is a graphic novel that tells the story of Art\u2019s parents and their experience in the Holocaust. It\u2019s very important for us to learn and understand part of history.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n
