One man\u2019s trash is another man\u2019s treasure. That idea is the principle behind this school\u2019s Junktique event, which finally returned after its two year long hiatus.<\/span><\/p>\n

The idea of Junktique is simple. It involves the donation of \u2018junk,\u2019 and reselling it to make a profit for the school to help with tuition costs and other school needs. This year, in fact, Junktique raised over $30,000.<\/span><\/p>\n

Junktique\u2019s origins go far beyond this year. \u201c[Junktique] started more than 50 years ago with parents who had sons who went to Catholic High,\u201d said Mrs. Joan Finnegan, who ran Junktique from 2003 to 2019 before the coronavirus caused its hiatus. \u201cAnd when the [back] gym was added, it grew from there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The event’s sudden halt also had another effect on Junktique. \u201cWe had already gathered all the stuff for 2019,\u201d said Mrs. Shannon Fratesi, who ran this year’s Junktique event, \u201cand it was all just sitting there in a room waiting for us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Junktique involves donating anything that one feels like has no use. \u201cA wide range of items are donated each year,\u201d said Mrs. Finnegan. \u201cThings like furniture, clothes, toys, books, kitchen items, pictures, and lamps, but each year it is always different in exactly what we get donated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Junktique meets many of the school\u2019s needs. \u201cThe main goal is to raise money for the school to keep tuition low,\u201d said Mrs. Fratesi, \u201cbut it also provides need-based scholarships for students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This school showed its support for Junktique through volunteer work. \u201cAll the P.E. boys, all the ROTC boys, several seniors, and lots of people in the study halls,\u201d said Mrs. Fratesi.\u201d I mean, I constantly had guys who helped.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Junktique also contributes outside the school. \u201cI had several bags of clothes and several pieces of furniture that I just had the Compassion Center\u00a0<\/span>come and get\u2026.I also had boxes for the <\/span>Humane Society\u00a0<\/span>because they\u2019re always looking for blankets and pillows for the dogs and cats,\u201d said Mrs.Fratesi.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Junktique shows that just because something has passed its use, it can still help. \u201cThe main goal is to raise money for the school so that we can keep tuition low, but I thought \u2018we\u2019ve got all this stuff,\u2019\u201d said Mrs. Fratesi, \u201c\u2018and people are going to throw it into their dumpsters. Why not have somebody else who can use that stuff, that way you\u2019re not taking up a landfill\u2019 I\u2019d rather somebody take it home than put it into a dumpster.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
