Most people would say that nothing good can come from skateboarding. It\u2019s too dangerous, or takes time away from other extra-curricular activities. But for sophomore Jackson Finnegan, skateboarding taught him more than just how to do radical kick flips.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m a photographer and designer for the yearbook,\u201d said Finnegan. Being a photographer means more than just pointing and shooting. Finnegan goes to almost every school event, even minor sports, and takes hundreds of photos at each one. Next comes the painstaking process of sorting through these pictures until he finally finds ten or fifteen that could work.<\/p>\n
\u201cJackson is a really good photographer,\u201d said Andrew Mackenzie, editor for the yearbook. \u201cHe shows up to more events than anyone else, and really knows all of the technical stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI started skateboarding when I was three,\u201d said Finnegan. He said that he first got interested by playing a skateboarding video game. \u201cI really got into skateboarding when I was twelve,\u201d said Finnegan. \u201cI would skate any chance I got.\u201d Finnegan doesn\u2019t skateboard nearly as much now, mostly because of the responsibilities that come with being in high school.<\/p>\n
Finnegan started pursuing photography last year. \u201cI got a camera from my grandfather and used that for a while,\u201d said Finnegan. \u201cThat\u2019s really what got me into photography.\u201d<\/p>\n
Finnegan figured out how to use a camera correctly while filming skateboarding videos. \u201cWe would hang out and skateboard in North Little Rock,\u201d said junior Reid Glatter, friend of Finnegan and fellow skater. \u201cHe filmed mostly random stuff, like we\u2019d just be skating by Dickey Steven\u2019s Park and he\u2019d start filming.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI had a camera and could film, and I wasn\u2019t ever really as good as my friends at skateboarding,\u201d said Finnegan. This is why he decided to start filming. \u201cI wanted to help out in a different way, and use my talents.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI filmed for a local skateboarding company for a while,\u201d said Finnegan. \u201cThey had a couple of stores and skate parks, and I\u2019d shoot some footage for them to help them get out there.\u201d<\/p>\n
Finnegan said that he learned how to correctly use a camera while filming. \u201cI really filmed and took pictures a lot better after that,\u201d said Finnegan, \u201cI got a lot of tips on how to use my camera and how to use contrast. A lot of it is technical stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n
What Finnegan learned while working for the skateboarding company really helped him later on in yearbook. \u201cJackson learned everything about his camera a lot faster than most photographers do. It\u2019s pretty impressive,\u201d said Mackenzie.<\/p>\n
\u201cMost of the technical stuff I learned I\u2019m using every day in yearbook,\u201d said Finnegan. He also gets a head start if Finnegan decides to choose a career in digital media that would involve photography or videography.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was really excited about filming for the company,\u201d said Finnegan. \u201cIt was a really great experience for me and I\u2019m really happy that I did it.\u201d<\/p>\n
