Über
Über is a way to help navigate the city for those without the access of a car. It has taken a simple concept of helping people to saving people’s lives on a nightly basis.
Über is an application on mobile stores. The app allows people to drive for money or request a ride to another location. It has given people in large cities such as New York City or Los Angeles a new way to move around the city. It has given college students a way to earn money while in school. The company also employs people full-time.
A driver must be at least 21 years old. He or she must have a four door car and have a clean criminal background. Once a person is considered a safe driver by passing all of the above requirements he can begin giving rides.
The rider requests a ride using the app and is given a price. The rider pays over phone and the driver receives a certain cut; the rest goes to Über.
Über caused a great amount of controversy when first released. The idea of stepping into a vehicle with a complete stranger is a little dangerous. Über has been in the news a few times for murders. One recent example is the killings in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Senior Sean Hightower said, “I hate riding with other people. The idea of stepping into a car with a complete stranger is not only crazy, but asking for danger. I wouldn’t get in a taxi if I needed to so there is no way I would use an Über.”
While others say it can be very convenient. Senior Jonathan Marshall said, “ I like the idea of Über because if I ever need to use it then I have it. I think the amount of people who get hurt is low enough that people shouldn’t worry. When taxis came out, it was the same way.”
Über also provides a safe alternative to the dangers of drinking and driving. It allows a person in need of help to get an available ride home at the touch of a button. The app also takes those drunk drivers off the road. It makes a difference every single night. The app can be the difference in stopping a man or woman from getting behind that wheel.
Senior Luis Hernandez said, “The app is pretty nice. It isn’t used a lot in a smaller city like Little Rock, but if you move to a huge city it’s worth having. It should be taken advantage more of in Arkansas though.”
